As long as the document is notarized and completed properly, the USCG/NVDC will accept the CG-1270 Certificate of Documentation in place of a CG-1340 Bill of Sale for purposes of transfer. The expiration date of the vessel’s Documentation is irrelevant to the Transfer/Exchange of Documentation, and there are no additional fees or penalties.
Once filed, the new Managing Owner will receive an updated Certificate of Documentation expiring one year after filing, or up to 5 years if they elect to have multiple years added to the Documentation.
