US Coast Guard Documented vessels have a Certificate of Documentation (CG-1270) in place of a title, which is stored onboard the vessel at all times, regardless if a bank or financial institution has a mortgage on the vessel.

If your Certificate of Documentation has been lost, mutilated, stolen or wrongfully withheld, you will need to either file for a Replacement (CG-1258 and a fee of $120) or you may simply renew your Certificate early (CG-1280 and a fee of $64). NOTE: If your Certificate of Documentation has passed 30 days expiration, you will need to Reinstate your Certificate of Documentation. You cannot obtain copies of expired Certificates. If you wish to have a second copy of an active Certificate of Documentation, you may request a Certified Copy via this link:

NOTE: Certified copies do not take the place of a valid Certificate, but may be used for marinas, brokers, etc.
